Notes |
- Samuel Leslie Morris, Sr., was called February 25, 1877, to the ministry of the
Presbyterian church at Walhalla, S.C., for an annual salary of $300. Two
small country churches promised another $300, and he wrote, "I now had an
income of $600 a year--not equal to that of Vanderbilt or Astor; but it gave
me the temerity to take unto myself a wife. As one of my church officers had
borrowed all of my "savings," something less than $100, I went to the town
bank and secured a small loan to buy a wedding suit and bring home my bride.
I was accordingly formally married October 23, 1877, to Ella M. Brice, only
child of Christopher S. Brice, Sr., of New Hope Associate Reformed
Presbyterian congregation near Woodward, S.C."

From Leslie Gilbert Christy:
"We always spelled the lovey names "Ma-ma" and Da". Hers derived from the SC lowcountry name for mother---maybe started out as the French "Maman". I'm not really sure but several generations of our family used it. My mother called her grandmother "Ma-ma" and she in turn was called that by her grandchildren. I should have kept the tradition, but some of mine call me "Grandma" and the younger ones say "Mi-mi". My brother Stephen who was the first grandchild designated "Da". Probably the first word he verbalized and as it happened in Da's presence, he doubtless thought he was talking to him."
Note: Ma-ma was his wife, Ella Brice Morris.
