"Old Homes of Fairfield: from The News and Herald, Winnsboro, S. C., Sept. 8, 1938:

"No section of Fairfield Co. is richer in history and historic homes than that surrounding New Hope ARP Church. Homes of Revolutionary days have all been burned or replaced by other dwellings, but the names of these pioneers still cling to the land they settled. Most of these early settlers were true patriots. The oldest homes in the community date back more than a hundred years.

The T. S. Brice home is the oldest. The land on which this home stands was given by grant of King George to Robert Wilson. It is known positively that Jane Brice, granddaughter of Robert Brice and his wife, Margaret Simonton Brice (or possibly partly by his father, James Brice) by or before 1817. All their twelve children were born here.

It was inherited by their youngest son, Thomas Scott Brice, who married Frances Eliza Adams and brought his bride here. .....

The grant made by King George III in 1775 is still kept by the family. the land was surveyed February 16, 1778 and was in what was then called Craven County.

      From _I Had a Real Good Time_by James Moffatt Brice (1862 - 1926):

"I do not know much about my grandfather Robert Brice. His picture, since destroyed in a fire, revealed a broad-shouldered, square-jawed man with a somewhat stern and severe countenance. He married a Miss Simonton, from whom many of their descendants inherited a slight, and some a considerable, abdominal rotundity.

I remember my Aunt Amanda saying that sometimes Robert Brice would return home and, on being asked where he had been, would reply, "Just buying another 'wee track' (tract) of land." He acquired a considerable estate in land and slaves, being able, without in any measure detracting from the corpus of the estate, to give each child on the occasion of his or her marriage $5000, or its equivalent. He lived to the age of 84.

There was a large family: Jane, who never married; John A.; Anna, who married a photographer named Lee; Robert, an Associate Reformed Presbyterian minister; James Simonton, my father; Christopher; Charles, a lawyer; Walter, a physician; Thomas; Mary , who married my mother's brother, Israel P. Moffatt; and Amanda, who married Major A. B. Enloe, a lawyer.

      . . .

Some of the Brice boys attended college, notably Robert, Charles and Walter. the others worked on the farm, except for my father, who seems to have looked after a small store on the farm."
