      JAMES POLK HAMMOND

GRIFFIN, GA., December 28, 1902. At a few moments past 4 o'clock this afternoon Mr. James Polk Hammond died in his chair at his home on Tenth Street, while in conversation with his friend, Capt. H. S. Watt. His death came suddenly and the only prelude to it was a violent coughing spell that ended in heart failure.

His health has not been good for weeks but it was supposed that he was normally well up to the time of his death.

In 1884 he lost his eyesight and since that time has been a helpless but cheerful invalid, his devoted sons furnishing the eyes he so badly needed. He was never heard to murmur or complain at his distress and even when financial troubles beset him he was the same pleasant gentleman that he was in the days of his affluence.

Mr. Hammond came to Griffin in 1886 from Savannah, having been connected with Hammond, Hull, and Company, the largest cotton factors in Savannah. He dealt largely in guano and lost money but continued his business until his eyesight failed.

He leaves five sons that are doubly orphaned: Henry Hull Hammond, J. Woods Hammond, Grattan Hammond, J.P. Hammond, Jr., and Arthur Hammond. His remains will be carried to Savannah to interment tomorrow night.
